Gill Education, Ireland’s leading publisher of educational and trade titles, is seeking an Editorial Manager for its demanding education department. The successful candidate will be the curator of editorial quality for the business, supervising and overseeing the editorial process from idea generation to publication.

By ensuring that all editors (both in-house and freelance) are correctly trained, briefed and managed, they ensure content (comprising print and digital product) is of the highest quality and suitable for the intended market (Primary/Post Primary). They will manage a schedule of projects in liaison with the Production team and with them have responsibility for delivery of projects to quality and on time.

Key Responsibilities/Tasks

  • Assisting the Commissioning Editors in the creation of value-for-money publishing proposals.
  • Assigning editors, agreeing contracts with external editors, and issuing briefs for all education products (print and digital).
  • Compiling editorial schedules and controlling budgets.
  • Coordinating the publishing schedule with the Production team.
  • Working with Production to devise and implement appropriate procedures to ensure maximum efficiency between Editorial and Design/Typesetting.
  • Liaising with authors as first point of editorial contact, and thereafter managing all author/editor relations throughout the development process.
  • Ensuring products (both print and digital) meet their given specifications in publishing proposals.
  • Determining the need for additional staff and sourcing appropriate freelance editors as required.
  • Determining and organising relevant editorial staff training.
  • Reviewing and appraising internal editors and submitting appropriate reports.
  • Keeping in touch with trends and developments in editorial and applying those where relevant to the Department, thereby monitoring and improving processes within the Editorial Department.
  • Providing leadership and direction for all internal and freelance editorial personnel, including coaching, development and mentoring.

Key Competencies/experience

  • Excellent editorial skills (esp. copy-editing/proofing/eye for detail).
  • A passion and proven talent for project management.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills.
  • A ‘can-do’ approach to working cooperatively within a successful publishing team.
  • The flexibility required to work successfully within a fast-paced, high-pressured environment and the ability to manage many projects running concurrently.

Experience/Qualifications

  • Third Level Qualification.
  • At least 6 years’ editorial experience, some of which must be at a senior level.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word (creating Templates, Macros, etc), Excel and Outlook.
